The Writer's Path

I'm in a frantic period right now - combination of school almost out, summer fun beginning with camping this weekend, and my NJ conference next weekend. For me this is a peak time, where I push myself on revisions, start thinking about summer submissions, and daydreaming about sharing book-love with an agent.

But with the excitement of a conference comes the post-conference-collapse-on-the-couch. And with the excitement of submissions often comes the dreaded-rejection-letter. So I needed to take a moment this morning to remind myself of the journey I'm on and embrace its peaks and valleys.

With the help of Sharpie, I present:

I had no idea when I wrote that first word what an exciting adventure writing would be! Yes the lows are totally turds-in-the-pool, but the highs make it worth the swim. (Not my best metaphor, but successfully explains the high rates of cholera among writers.)

Ahh, take a deep breath, focus on the long term, and write on!

  1. I'm the opposite of frantic, kinda comatose. LOL. I'm hoping to recharge the next couple of weeks and then be a Happy Writer (optimism hangs around even while comatose). Hope you have a great time camping!

    1. Optimistic comatose is the level right before zen enlightenment, I think!

    1. Thanks Lauri! If you're not having fun with humor, then it just doesn't seem worth it :)

  3. I would make one amendment to your chart, Instead of the cloud thingies, I'd have the line go right back to the beginning. ;)

    1. I suppose you're right... the line keeps going up, and you keep learning more with each conference and class and critique and, of course, rejection!

    1. You must be referring to the turds in the pool:) Just think how many writers there would be if the process weren't so fraught with floaters!

  6. First of all, I am loving the drawing! Second- the reality of it all is so true. The ups and downs are tremendous and I too am hoping that one day coming across the turds will make the swim worth it. I know it will and I don't know any one with more perseverance than you. Glad the conference was great- knew it would be. I'm hoping to get back there next year myself. Just in case you're wondering, I'm still writing. :)

    1. Yay! Keep writing. You will definitely be shopping a book next year. Heck by this time next year, you will probably be halfway through your second book :)
